In September 2026, Indians poured a record ₹32,490 crore into mutual funds through Systematic Investment Plans — the highest monthly figure ever, according to AMFI data, edging past August's ₹32,297 crore. Net SIP flows for FY26 have crossed ₹2 lakh crore, and new SIP registrations have outpaced closures for five months running. By any measure, the discipline habit is winning. This is for learning only.
But here's the uncomfortable question behind the celebration: everyone has "a SIP" now — but is yours actually large enough to get you where you want to go, or is it just a comforting monthly habit?
A SIP is a method, not a plan
Starting a SIP is the easy part. What decides the outcome is the amount, the duration, and whether it keeps pace with your goal after inflation. Two people can both "do SIP" and end up decades apart, simply because one ran the numbers and the other didn't.
Consider the maths. A SIP of ₹10,000 a month at an assumed 12% return grows to roughly ₹50 lakh in 15 years — of which about ₹18 lakh is your own money and the rest is compounding. Impressive. But if your actual goal is ₹1 crore in 15 years, ₹10,000 a month doesn't get you there — you'd need closer to ₹20,000 a month. Most people discover this gap far too late.
The quiet enemy: inflation
The goal itself keeps moving. If you spend ₹50,000 a month today, at 6% inflation that same lifestyle costs nearly ₹2.9 lakh a month in 30 years. A SIP sized for today's prices will fall painfully short of tomorrow's. Any honest plan has to target the future number, not the present one.
How to check if your SIP is enough
Don't guess — reverse-engineer it. Start from the corpus you actually need and work backward to the monthly amount:
- Pick the goal and the year — retirement, a home, a child's education.
- Grow it for inflation to what it will cost then.
- Work out the monthly SIP that reaches it at a sensible return.
Then compare that number with what you're actually investing. If there's a gap, you have options: increase the amount, step it up each year as your income grows, or extend the horizon.
Run your own numbers in two minutes: the SIP calculator shows what your monthly amount grows to (or the SIP needed to reach a target), and the retirement calculator works out the corpus and SIP for your retirement. For the idea behind it all, see SIP: the simplest way to build wealth. The record inflows are great news — just make sure your share of them is actually sized for your goal.
