How to choose stocks for intraday trading — and why it's so hard

Every morning, thousands search for the "best intraday stocks" or the "best stock for intraday today". Intraday trading means buying and selling the same share within one day. Before you look for today's pick, you should see one number. A SEBI study found that in 2022-23, about 7 out of 10 individual intraday traders lost money. For those who traded very often (more than 500 times a year), 80% lost. This article explains what intraday traders look for, and why it is so hard. It is for learning only, not advice.

What intraday traders look for

People who trade intraday usually want stocks that:

  • Move a lot in a day (high volatility), so there is a price swing to catch.
  • Trade in large volumes (high liquidity), so they can enter and exit quickly.
  • Are in the news, because news creates movement.

This is why "most active stocks" lists exist. But notice: every trader can see the same lists. There is no secret edge in a public list.

Why it is so hard

  • The odds, proven. SEBI's own data shows most lose, and the more they trade, the more they lose.
  • Costs eat you alive. Every trade carries brokerage, STT and other charges. Trade many times a day and these quietly add up to a huge drag. The study found loss-makers spent a large slice of their money just on costs.
  • Speed and emotion. Decisions made in seconds, under pressure, are rarely good decisions.
  • You compete with machines. Much intraday volume is driven by fast computer programs you cannot outrun.

Young traders are most at risk

The same study found that traders under 30 lost even more often — about 76% of them. The excitement is highest where the experience, and the odds, are lowest.

A safer path

Wanting your money to grow is natural. But for almost everyone, patient investing beats daily trading. A rule-based approach that holds for weeks to months — like our Model Portfolio — avoids the cost drag and the stress of intraday, and lets a trend actually develop. There is no reliable "best stock for intraday today". There is only a game where the data says most people lose. Know that before you risk your money on a single day's move.
