Every morning, before the Indian market opens, traders ask the same question: will the market go up or down today? To guess, many look at GIFT Nifty. You may also hear it called by its old name, SGX Nifty. This article explains what it is in plain words. It is for learning only.
What GIFT Nifty is
GIFT Nifty is simply a bet on where the Nifty 50 will go, traded outside the normal Indian market hours. It trades at GIFT City in Gujarat, on the NSE International Exchange. Because it trades for almost 21 hours a day — far longer than our market — it keeps moving while India sleeps. So early in the morning it already reflects overnight news from the US and Asia.
Why it replaced SGX Nifty
For years this contract traded in Singapore and was called SGX Nifty. On 3 July 2023, it moved to India and became GIFT Nifty. The basic idea did not change — it is still a way to trade the Nifty from outside the regular session. It just moved home to India and got longer trading hours.
Why people watch it before the open
The Indian market opens at 9:15 AM. But GIFT Nifty has already been trading all morning. So if big news broke overnight, GIFT Nifty usually moves first. A higher GIFT Nifty often points to a higher opening for our market; a lower one often points to a weak start. That is why it appears in almost every "pre-market" update, including our own Pre-Market page.
Why it is only a hint, not a promise
Here is the part most people forget. GIFT Nifty hints at the opening, not the whole day. The market can open high and close low, or the opposite. It reacts to the first few minutes of trading, then the real day takes over with its own news and moods.
So treat GIFT Nifty like a weather forecast, not a guarantee. It is useful for understanding why the market might open a certain way. It is a poor reason to make a quick trade. A calm, rule-based method — like the one behind our Model Portfolio — does not change its decisions because of a pre-market wiggle. If you are weighing short-term trading against patient investing, see intraday trading vs positional investing.
Watching GIFT Nifty is fine. Trading your savings on it is not. Use it to understand the morning, then let your plan — not the forecast — decide what you do.
