In October 2026, SEBI once again warned investors about unregistered WhatsApp and Telegram groups pushing fabricated stock tips, fake "research reports" and doctored profit screenshots. It's a recurring menace — and in a jittery, correcting market, the promises of "sureshot multibaggers" and "guaranteed returns" only get louder, because that's when anxious investors are most tempted to chase a shortcut. This is for learning only.
The red flags of a stock-tip scam
- Guaranteed or "assured" returns. No one can promise this. By law, a registered analyst cannot — so the promise itself is the giveaway.
- "Sureshot", "multibagger", "jackpot". Superlatives and urgency are marketing, not research.
- Pressure to act now — a closing window, a "limited" call. Real research doesn't expire in ten minutes.
- Screenshots of fat profits. Trivial to fake; shown precisely to trigger FOMO.
- No SEBI registration. If they can't show a registration number, walk away.
- Pump-and-dump setups — everyone pushed into a thin, illiquid stock at once, so insiders can sell into the crowd.
What a genuine, registered analyst looks like
A SEBI-Registered Research Analyst publishes research to all subscribers alike, carries a registration number (format INH…), discloses conflicts of interest, and never guarantees returns. It's different from an Investment Adviser, who gives personalised advice — knowing which is which tells you exactly what you're getting (see Research Analyst vs Investment Adviser). You can verify any registration on SEBI's website and raise complaints on SEBI SCORES.
The better habit: don't take tips — do the work
The antidote to tip culture is a repeatable process you control. Instead of acting on a forwarded message, screen for stocks against your own objective conditions, study the shortlist, and decide with risk defined in advance. That's slower and far less exciting than a "hot tip" — and far more durable.
Know the warning signs cold in how to spot a stock-market scam, and build your own shortlist instead of trusting someone else's with the technical screener. For the record: Sanjeev Research is run by a SEBI-Registered Research Analyst (Reg. No. INH000027423) — educational, transparent, with every call on the record and no guaranteed-return promises, ever.
