How to spot a stock-market scam

If someone promises to double your money with no risk, they are not offering an opportunity — they are running a scam. Learning the warning signs is one of the most valuable money skills you can have. This is for learning only.

The red flags — memorise these

  • "Guaranteed" or "assured" returns. No honest investment can promise this. Markets go up and down. This single phrase is the clearest scam signal.
  • Double-your-money / fixed daily profit. Real wealth builds slowly; "2x in a month" is bait.
  • Pressure and urgency. "Only today," "last few seats," "act now" — designed to stop you thinking.
  • Unregistered "advisors" running paid tips on Telegram and WhatsApp.
  • Screenshots of huge profits — these are the easiest thing in the world to fake.

The pump-and-dump trap

This is the classic one. Operators quietly buy a small, cheap stock. Then they flood social media with excited "tips" to pump up the price as followers rush in. Once the price is high, they dump their shares — and the stock collapses, leaving the followers holding losses.

Real recent cases

SEBI has been cracking down hard. It has barred multiple unregistered "finfluencers" for running pump-and-dump schemes on Telegram and WhatsApp. In one of the biggest actions, in December 2025 SEBI impounded over ₹546 crore from an operator who was effectively giving unregistered investment advice disguised as "education" while collecting hundreds of crores from participants. These are not small, rare events — they're happening continuously.

How to protect yourself

  • Check for SEBI registration. Any genuine research analyst or adviser has a SEBI registration number. Verify it on sebi.gov.in.
  • Remember: nobody can guarantee returns. Full stop.
  • Avoid paid "tip" groups promising sure-shot calls.
  • If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
  • Report suspicious schemes to SEBI's complaint portal, SCORES (scores.sebi.gov.in).

Genuine research helps you understand risk and make your own decisions — it never promises to remove risk. If anyone tells you they've abolished risk, walk away.
