How a SEBI-registered Research Analyst's model portfolio works

When a model portfolio is published by a SEBI-registered Research Analyst (RA), it sits inside a regulatory framework designed to protect investors. That registration is not a marketing badge — it comes with obligations, and knowing them tells you what to expect.

What a Research Analyst is

A Research Analyst is registered with SEBI (the Securities and Exchange Board of India) to publish research and recommendations. Crucially, an RA publishes the same research to all subscribers alike. That is different from an Investment Adviser, who gives advice tailored to one person's finances. A model portfolio is research, published to everyone — not personalised advice, and never trade execution on your behalf.

What the registration requires

A registered RA operates under defined duties, including:

  • Disclosure with every recommendation — the basis of the call, the horizon, and the risks.
  • Conflict-of-interest and holding disclosures — whether the analyst or associates hold the stock.
  • A published, retained record of recommendations, kept for years.
  • Advertising rules — no promise of assured or guaranteed returns, and no unverified performance claims.

These rules exist so you can judge the research on evidence rather than on hype.

Why "registered" matters for you

Anyone can post a stock idea online. A registered RA is accountable to a regulator, must disclose conflicts, and must keep an honest, on-record track of what was recommended. If you are going to follow one portfolio with real money, that accountability is exactly the kind of thing worth insisting on.

What you can — and cannot — expect

You can expect a disciplined, disclosed, on-record process. You cannot expect certainty: registration "in no way guarantees performance or provides any assurance of returns," in SEBI's own words. A good RA leans into that honesty rather than hiding it.
