What a rule-based model portfolio is (and how it works in India)

A rule-based model portfolio is a single basket of stocks where every decision — which stock goes in, how much it gets, and when it comes out — is made by a fixed set of rules, not by opinion on the day. You follow the same portfolio everyone else on the service follows. Nothing is decided in the heat of a headline.

That is the whole idea: replace dozens of daily judgement calls with one disciplined process you can actually stick to.

How it is different from a stock tip

A stock tip answers one question — "which stock?" — and leaves the three hard ones to you: when to buy, how much to invest, and when to sell. A model portfolio answers all four. The stock, the entry, the position size and the exit all come from the same rulebook, so you are following a process rather than a stream of predictions.

What "rule-based" actually means

Every step is defined before a position exists:

  • Selection — stocks are screened from a large universe against fixed conditions, so a name qualifies on evidence, not on how exciting it sounds.
  • Position size — each stock gets the same small slice of the portfolio, so no single name can dominate the outcome.
  • Exit — a position is sold when a defined exit condition triggers, not when nerves or news take over.

Because the rules are written down, the same situation always produces the same decision. That consistency is the point.

What the investor actually does

Your job is simple: when the system signals a buy, you place the trade; you size it the same as every other position; and you hold it until the exit signal arrives. You are not screening hundreds of stocks or timing the market — the system does that part before the signal reaches you.

Who it suits

A rule-based model portfolio fits investors who want one portfolio to follow instead of hunting for ideas, who are comfortable acting on clear signals, and who accept that some positions will lose — because no honest process wins every time. It does not suit anyone looking for guaranteed returns or a fresh tip every day.
